Darrell Burgan has released another album under his Palancar project, this time a collection of three introspective ambient pieces representing 'moments' from his childhood that changed the direction of his life. The music is textural, somewhat dark, but quite approachable and suitable for either active or passive listening. Darrell is privileged to have his music released on Treetrunk, one of his favorite netlabels, and hopes that there will be more Palancar music on Treetrunk in the future....

For "Constant 23", Phillip Wilkerson offers a quasi-organic sitar-sounding drone that seems to twist and grow (complete with pops and crackles), in a kind of psychedelic time-lapse haze. This long-form drone is further enhanced by nurturing, transcendent harmonies floating in a luscious and spacious ambience. Constant 23 is designed for endless loop play for hours of seamless enjoyment. Treetrunk Records really enjoys this version of Constant, and hopes you will, too....

Ambient artist AON recently approached Treetrunk Records looking for collaboration. They offered a sample of works, which were excellent. A short time afterwards, AON furnished this very nice mid-form drone, both mild and majestic, called "Enkedeu". Treetrunk was interested. "The song is a song that explores itself. "Ghostly Radiance" is a split collaboration between The Ghost Between The Strings and mystified. The Ghost Between The Strings proposed the split, and his tracks are guitar-based ambience and dark ambience, full of moodiness and subtlety. Mystified's half tends to be a bit dronier but is also dark and full of shifting moods. Listening to the tracks together makes sense to the artists, and they hope you agree. Tracks 1-5 are by The Ghost Between The Strings, tracks 6-10 are by...

"Constant 22" has its roots in a chorale by J. S. Bach. The four vocal parts were programmed instead of sung with the resulting recording being further stretched and manipulated. Lastly, the entire piece has been enhanced with brainwave synchronization. When using headphones to listen to the recording, the left and right channels will, at first, appear to be somewhat "out of sync". Over a period of time, the brain will synchronize the two signals thereby causing particular...

"This music originated instinctively as I was sitting and watching the rain for many days. It was a heavy weather outside as dark clouds covered the sky and the sounds of rain made the rest of usual city sounds unhearable. Such weather has always made me think that there is a drone sound somewhere among the puring water. So I just started to play a single drone. And then I started improvising, to make my music correspond with the rain. And so this music (became) one with the rain. It...

"'Escape from Lhasa' was plotted out very carefully in 80 segments of 48 seconds each with the parameters changed on the fly (which required 64 minutes of extreme alertness to execute!), and has five distinct levels in which the steps descend by powers of three, with each of the sixteen tracks changed separately within those levels in order to descend seamlessly from the mountain. It represents the sprituality of the mountaintop, a place beyond words, in which the earthiness of monastery...

Treetrunk recently learned that K.M. Krebs has returned to Canada, where his musical efforts continue: ". . .I played a show last weekend with some fellows from the US. The turnout was very small due to its accidental scheduling with another electronic show. Regardless, I had a good time since I hadn't played a live show for over two years. I was able to record it and wanted to offer it for release on Treetrunk. . . There is no tracklist, as a lot of it was new material with a lot of...

In February of 2007, longtime friend / collaborator / painter Sandy Spreitz introduced an idea to me that I really loved. He offered to paint 2 paintings for me, with a total of 4 elemental subjects, and asked for me to write music for the paintings. The first painting was to represent the elements "earth" and "air", the second "water" and "fire". And, while Mr. Spreitz painted his paintings, he promised to listen to music by mystified. Mr. Spreitz...

In 2007, mystified ( www.mystifiedmusic.com) approached Seism ( www.myspace.com/seism666 ) and asked if he would be interested in creating a split audio project. Seism agreed, and sent 2 excellent tracks to mystified. Mystified added 2 of his own, and the split "mystified Versus Seism" was born. Phonography, radio as source, generative audio, granular synthesis and other experimental methods were used to create these tracks. We hope that you enjoy them!

Leading-edge ambient artist Seetyca has gifted Treetrunk with this excellent suite of 6 pieces. "The suite was recorded and mixed in October/November at Mbira v.04 studio by Seetyca, and mastering was by by Artin Mucht. This record was made by using samples of mystified and is dedicated to the time wasted by thinking about time running by." -- Seetyca. Note: The samples sent to Seetyca were phonographic in nature, and originated in the Saint Louis soundworld of mystified.

K.M. Krebs has been kind enough to approach Treetrunk Records with his latest release, "Fog Sequences". He explains: "Inspired by a series of fog photographs I recently saw at the National Museum of Contemporary Art here in Korea. All the tracks began as output from a generative FM drone generator which was run through unpredictable distortion effects (all made in csound). The results were then used as a basis for composing these 6 tracks." Mysterious, ever-changing,...

Some of you may already know this, but mystified was once AutoCad. AutoCad went through a period of great exposure, when my dabbling with fractal ambient and techno music landed me featured positions at many websites and even an appearance in "Spin" Magazine. I have, thanks to Pivotal Records, reclaimed the files for my original cd release "Logarithm: The Beat Of Life". Most of these pieces were written using mathematical or natural data (as sequence and chord generators)....

I am interested in some sonic ideas. One idea is to take something small or ordinary and make it sound much larger than it is. Kind of like the principle George Lucas used when he glued together hundreds of model kits to make his original "Death Star". Another is to pursue textures and surfaces, and I am especially interested in pieces where textures and surfaces continue to shift. "Trash Everest" involves these ideas and more. A single bag of trash was used to create...

Musician Edward J. Powley created a wonderful set of shimmering generative pieces. "For each track, a few thousand iterations of Conway's Game of Life were used to choose notes to play through a bank of plucked string synths. The resulting wav files were then processed in Adobe Audition to make them a bit easier on the ears." Highly recommended!

Treetrunk is proud to present a whimsical and intelligent set of generative pieces by K.M. Krebs. "The Jade Furnace I is the first in an undetermined number of albums that will be released on Treetrunk Records. The name is derived from a Taoist alchemical metaphor that denotes the space in which the great work of alchemical transformation takes place. I have always felt a very strong resonance between the process of creating music and the symbolism and metaphors of alchemy. This album...

Combining phonography and longform ambient genres seemed like a good idea, and I especially wanted to work from a piece I did with Stephen Philips, "Texture One" (2005, Webbed Hand Records). Namely, I wanted to use glurp sounds, or sounds created by water. All of the many sounds in this longform piece are 100 percent harvested and created at my apartment. One of the predominant sounds is actually a brewing device malfunctioning. I promise that none of the sounds involve my urinating--...

Music can seem both real and unreal, and its ability to render certain scenarios and situations depends in part on what means are used. One way to add to a sense of "reality" is to use actual recordings of atmospheres-- field recordings. This album, "Nocturne", is a combination of field recordings, phonographic collages, and sample work, created primarily to evoke places and times important to the composer. Thanks first to Jerry for the drums and Royce Lee for the arpeggio...

Mystified's acquisition of a recording device has ushered in a new era for the band. Rather than mixing pre-created sounds or sounds created by other artists, mystified has embarked on the delicious task of making his own sounds from scratch-- or, rather, harvesting them from his surroundings, in phonographic style. Using this new device and a cheap microphone (soon to be replaced), mystified has captured through sound collage and direct recording the experience of apartment life in South City...

"Fractal Diner 3" is part of a continuing series of Treetrunk Records compilations based on fractal and generative music. The purpose of this and similar compilations is to highlight artists' uses of different programs and means for music creation. Four artists are represented on "Fractal Diner 3". Each wrote music using different composing techniques. Image-based generation and several fractal / generative programs were used, as were other means.

Akashic Crow's Nest, a recording project of C.P. McDill, utilizes images as the source material for its distinct sound. First, very long pictures are created using Photoshop. Sometimes they are hand-drawn, and sometimes they are cut from photographs and subjected to effects and other manipulation. They are saved as very long and narrow bitmaps, and then loaded into a program that reads the hues and values of the image, one row at a time, from left to right, treating the picture as a sort of...

For some time, it has been possible to use fractal mathematics to generate midi files. Less common is the ability to use fr / gen methods to generate or effect .wav and .mp3 files. I recently came upon a means to create music in this way, and was excited to produce the longform piece, "Fabrication". Layers of home-created industrial atmospheric samples are puncutuated by deep, reverberent percussion and washes of static. Frantically spinning samples cycle in and out. The only rules in...

Fractal Diner 2 is the second installment in a series of releases focussing on fractal and generative collaboration. Four different artists have used different systems and programs to create outstanding examples of fr/gen music. Pieces on this album range from New Age / easy listening to dissonant and dark environmental. The album, though relatively short, definitely conveys a large range of moods and modes.

How long is the history of the world? Thousands of years? Some would say tens of thousands of years, or more. Or, it could be that certain defining moments summarize the world's history. . . that all we might need to know about are a few happenings and that would explain history at large. mystified ( www.mystifiedmusic.com ) thinks this is so. Hence, this album: "5 minutes (a history of the world)". Covering Moses on the Mountain, the Sack of Rome, and a solemn military victory,...

Fractal Diner represents a collaboration between several artists with the purpose to create a compilation of fractal and generative material. Different methods and programs were used to write the pieces on this album. Some pieces are remixes of material by another artist, and others are original works. Given the diversity of material, we at Treetrunk feel that this album is surprisingly coherent and is definitely great fun to listen to. From becalmed sinewaves to twinkling bells to unnamed and...

"Music For Infants" was created by mystified ( www. mystifiedmusic.com ). Filled with quiet bell-like and percussive variations, the piece was written with small children in mind-- but is not exclusive to kids and can be enjoyed by adults, as well. Quiet morphing phrases twinkle like the stars of the sky, affording the brain with music both comforting and challenging. Listeners will be inclined to let their minds wander, staying alert yet creative, visualizing what nice things occur...
